If you've ever wandered through a city and spotted tiny mini 5G cell towers placed on poles for street lighting. They look like small boxes however they're actually sending wireless signals from cell phone providers to your phone.

These smaller towers are replacing the larger, purpose-built cell towers. Although  what is a safe distance from a cell tower 're not as visible, they still can create problems for those who live nearby.

The FCC's Radiation Exposure Thresholds determine the safe limit at which a person can be exposed to electromagnetic radiation from wireless devices. The exposure limits are based upon scientific research that prove that electromagnetic energy could cause harm to health.

The absorption rate specific (SAR) is an indication of the radiofrequency energy that is absorption by tissues. It's typically 1.6 Watts per kilogram spread over a Gram of tissue.

But, since 5g operates at higher frequencies and has the potential to cause greater energy intensity on the skin and other directly-exposed body areas. This can lead to a wide range of potential harms, including exacerbated appearance of skin conditions such as dermatitis, skin cancer and cataracts.

Due to the potential for negative effects of 5G radiation, PSU has chosen to create a general power density limit of 4 mW/cm2 based on the average across 1 centimeter, and never to exceed 30 minutes for all 5G services at 3000 GHz. This limit for localization is in line with the maximum spatial-average SAR of 1.6 W/kg, averaged over one grams of tissues at six GHz.

If you've ever operated a cell phone, you probably know that a safe location from the tower should be at least 400 meters away. This is because the transmitting power of a cell tower increases dramatically the farther your location from the tower.

While this sounds like a good idea, the reality is that people who live close to towers may actually be more susceptible to health issues. For example, a study from 2014 in India discovered that those living within 50 meters of cell towers experienced significantly more health complaints than those living further away from the antennas.

This study showed that residents who moved into areas farther away from cell towers experienced their symptoms return to normal within a few days. Other studies have revealed that exposure to high frequencies of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (EMFs) can cause brain tumors, cancers, and other health problems.

This is because RF radiation, used in wireless communication, can penetrate the body's outer layer, the skin. This is important to understand because the skin acts as a barrier to protect against injuries caused by mechanical forces, infections caused by pathogenic microorganisms and the entry of harmful substances. It is also the biggest organ in the human body and is accountable for keeping the integrity of the other organs.


The FCC's Minimum Exposure Thresholds for the Minimum Exposure

The FCC's Minimum Exposure Thresholds rely on numerous assumptions that aren't supported by evidence from science. These include the erroneous assumption that exposures to RF radiation are safe due to minimal penetration into the body (i.e., tissue heating).

This assumption does not take into account the deeper penetration of the ELF parts of modulated RF signals as well as the effect of brief bursts of heat generated by RF waves that are pulsed. These assumptions are not in line with the current understanding of biological effects of RF radiation, and thus they shouldn't be considered for health protection exposure standards.

In addition to that, ICNIRP and FCC are limiting their maximum limit of exposure to the local SARs, based on the peak speed of spatial absorption (psSAR) that is an inadequate dosimetric tool to determine the degree of radiation exposure. Particularly, psSAR is  safe distance to live from cell phone tower  when frequencies exceed 6 GHz. Additionally, psSAR hasn't been tested for RF radiation exposed to other environmental agents such as sunlight. The interactions of RF radiations with different environmental agents could result in antagonistic or synergistic effects. This would result in an increased risk of negative health adverse effects.
